As a dancer and a seamstress, I know the struggle all too well.
When I first started learning to sew stretch garments, I was so excited to make leotards and costumes for myself, but there was hardly anything out there that worked for a dancer’s body.
The patterns I could find were basic, a bit dated, and didn’t offer the elegant styles or
movement I wanted.
So, I did what many of us do: I grabbed the one leotard pattern I could find and began
experimenting.
I hacked it, twisted it, added details, changed the fit, and made mistake after mistake.
Slowly but surely, I began to figure things out for myself. And while I loved the creative
challenge, I kept thinking:
Why isn’t this easier? Why aren’t there patterns designed for dancers, with all their unique
needs in mind?
That’s when the idea for Fenella Marie was born. A pattern brand for dancers (and creatives like you)
With my background in the costume industry, I’ve spent years understanding how garments work with the body in motion, not just how they look on a hanger.
I also run a small business making custom dancewear, and one thing I hear over and over
from customers is:
"I’d love to sew something like this myself… but I don’t know where to start."
